I Am Indy

Dad and I got another chance to visit Kentucky Speedway yesterday [thanks Randy]. This time we had pit passes for the Meijer 300 qualifications. As a kid, the only racing I was familiar with was the open wheel Indy Cars and this was naturally because I'm a hoosier and very familiar with the Indianapolis 500. Over the past few years, the NASCAR marketing machine has left open wheel racing in the dust but yesterday's trip validated that there is still a big following for Indy Car.

As we ended the day, they drivers were sitting outside their respective garage areas signing autographs. As I watched Danica Patrick's line grow to riduculous size I thought to myself, there is something wrong with this picture. Kids and adults (mainly adult males who have the hots for Danica) alike, waiting an hour to have another human being sign a piece of paper. Does that sound odd?

Note: I'm struggling to upload photos so I will add some when Blogger is not being so cantankerous.

I don't think it's odd, I think it's just a natural feeling humans have. If it were Rick Warren,Dave Ramsey, or Chris Tomlin would you be in line?? It's all in how you look at it.

Haven't been to the KY Speedway in awhile, but was wondering if you'd heard anything about the Speedway suing NASCAR? Apparently the owner wants a Nextel race, and he's decided that suing NASCAR is the best way to get one. Sounds pretty ridiculous to me. From what I gather, he wants a system where track owners bid on races, which seems to me would mean that a lot of the traditional, older tracks would be out of luck. Anyway, there is a group fighting the lawsuit and they have an online petition at their website: http://www.thetracksuit.info/. I went ahead and signed it because I think racing is about fans and traditions, not corporate money and owners.

My nephew and brother-in-law were at the race too! They got to be in the pit, but they were down by his favorite racer-Tony Stewart.

I am not much for autograph's these days, but as a kid I stood in line at Cavs games trying to get them to sign my little program...and believe me that was long before the LeBron James era. (Do you even remember Mark Price)?

Okay, my brother-in-law told me I made a huge mistake-they were not by Tony Stewart. He informed me I have NASCAR and INDY cars all mixed up - They were at the race but by Tony Kanaan in the pit - who ever that is - not Tony Stewart...
