Tuesday Talk

Twice a week our church opens our basketball gym to the community. It's always been a great outreach. It's hard to get men in the church but they sure like to play ball. Midway through the night we stop the action and share a quick message.

Last night I had the opportunity to talk to the guys. I eat that stuff up. To know that I have a captive audience with guys who probably never go to church...it doesn't get much better than that.

I talked with them about Tom Brady, quarterback for the New England Patriots. Last year he was interviewd by 60 Minutes [read the transcript here]. What I found interesting was that even though he has won three Super Bowls, has a $60 million dollar contract, and was named one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful, he still admits to being unfulfilled. Here is what he said,

“Why do I have three Super Bowl rings and still think there's something greater out there for me? I mean, maybe a lot of people would say, ‘Hey man, this is what is.’ I reached my goal, my dream, my life. Me, I think, ‘God, it's got to be more than this.’ I mean this isn't, this can't be what it's all cracked up to be.”

“What's the answer?” asks Kroft [interviewer].

“I wish I knew. I wish I knew,” Brady replies.

Though Tom and I have never shared quality time on the golf course, I have to believe what is missing is an intimate relationship with Jesus. It's just a reminder that the things of this world, even in their abundance, cannot bring fulfillment. Our only answer is Jesus!

Chad, they actually wanted to do that interview with some players from the Cincinnati Bengals, but they couldn't get access to the Hamilton County Corrections Facility...
